Virgil of Tx. First bear for 2010 Spring bear camp

black bear hunting
Virgil Wilson of Texas takes this nice 5 ft black with his 270. Just 3 hours in the stand he saw 2 other bear and he pull the trigger on this nice bear. Now Virgil was the lucky winner of the Trophy Sweepstakes Life Member draw from North American Hunting Club. In Jan he received his confirmation for the hunt and the heart started pumpin fast from then on. He was accomopanied by his long time friend Terry. Together these 2 fellows came all the way to Manitoba for Virgil to harvest a bear which he did. Way to go Virgil on a great bear which will make an awesome rug.

Bear print in the mud

Late in the afternoon we come to this site and here we have tracks in the mud. Each year activity starts to increase and this year being an early spring we thought we would see more prints but till we get bait in to sites I guess there is no smells to encourage visitors. This was a good print sinking in mud although it is hard to tell

Spring adventures

Manitoba outdoor fun
Here a dad and his boys spend an afternoon catching suckers in a drainage ditch just near one of our bait site. Each year during the run off Suckers come up the drain ditches to spaun and locals spend hours catching and taking them home to make Homemade salmon. Very delicious in a sandwhich when working outsite.

Spring bear baiting

bear baiting
WE finished the local farm baits now we move to the Management where we travel distances of 12 miles on the quad from where the truck sits to last bait in the south. We are taking 12 barrels of oats and grease hoping to get 10 done and 2 will have 2 barrels taken in as when the frost goes out it makes very difficult getting a barrel in.

Yamah 700 Grizzly

bear hunt
WE have a few miles between baits and rather than reload Warren and Tim decided to just run the quads, 75 km and i could hardly keep up to these 2 renegades. I sure hope they do not travel like this with a hunter on behind.

Bear sign

black bear
This was a new bait last spring we didnot hunt it but this spring there is lots of sign of good activity over summer. Local farmer said there was a big red bear here last fall when he was bailing hay  in the area.

Apr 15, Spring bear hunt

spring bear
All loaded and ready to head to outcamp. 2 hours drive and 4 hours unloading and we will be there. Tomorrow get bait in woods. This is same day as we went out last.

2010 spring bear baiting

Spring bear baiting, we got some bait barrels in on Apr 5, no activity or sign of bear movement but from past experience it is not till after mid Apr before we see real movement. Unless water is too high and washes a bear out it is early  yet to see  much movement.

Madison Deer and Turkey Expo

Barrry and Barbara Cruea of Mi stopped at the booth while we were at the Madison deer and Turkey Expo on Apr 9-11. Attendance over  the weekend was down but we did have many clients visit us. Thanks for coming all.

Gardener in the mud

Maanitoba gardening
Just cannot stay out of mud. Here Tom digs the parsnips which have been out all winter. Now they are ready to eat, they taste much better after they have been frozen.
