Frost in Manitoba in May?

Can you believe we would be covering the tomatoes this late in May? Well if we hadnt they would be black.. even with covers the tips of some of the leaves are nipped with frost.. usually after the full moon which was May 17 we do not hav to worry about frost but 2011 is going to be another year to remember I am thinkn. 5:30 am frost was thick enough to scrape with scrapper..

Bear bait in spring

After coming back to the lodge we had a call from local First Nations to tell us they are having problems with bears in the area so off we go to place a few  barrels at fall bait stations in hopes of keeping bears from traveling around the locals houses.. This bait was cleaned out and we replaced a barrel of oats.. not really any activity but I am sure it wont be long before the big bruins will be here..

Spring in Manitoba

gardeningEvery year Tom sows a garden and this year he has his 9N Ford tractor to work the ground before planting.. He redid this tractor over the winter and now all his hard work paid off.. I dont think there will be any large fields being plowed but his garden supplies some taste spice pickles and fresh tomatoes  and other vegetables when the hunters are here in the fall..

Beaver Hut on Manitoba sloughs

bearver hutOur beaver population has exploded in the last couple of years.. This year our municipalities are offering bountys for the removal of teh critters. Here jsut near a bear bait is this large hut. All bear hunters know beavers are a good source of food for bears in the spring.. and along the shore we see foot prints in the mud tell in us the bears are travelling here.

Testimonial for a good Black bear Outfitter

Manitoba bear hunts I just want to say what a wonderful time I had, even though it was short. As you know I have hunted all over Canada but you guys were special. I felt like I have know you all my life. You allowed me to go in the bush and help and enjoy my self emencely. I would like to come back on the NAHC Life hunt next year. You and Tom are truly the best I have hunted with and I already look forward to next year and hopefully the “Tree Hugger Stand” is still an option

A little entertainment one evening, shotgun loaded , spot light lit, 3 dogs and 5 wingnuts ready for some action.. Noises in the red shed is assumed to be a raccoon, Warren takes the credit for jumping the highest when he catches his touque on a stick as he peekes into the attic.. A shot rings out and he rushes from the shed “I cannot hear”  After some good laughs and a couple more shots.. Here is the trophy Raccoon..

Hilton Stand in the Spruce

This bear bait in a spruce bog has had many bears harvested at it.. Over 18 years of history at this bait and 12 years of our hunters taking bears each year.. usually 1-2 good adult bears are taken over 4 weeks of hunting.. We try to get 2 barrels of oats in before the ground thaws usualy snow banks are still in trees and then usually have to add oats during last week of hunting.
