Big GRass business

Tom seems to be the driver when we are travelling. Here Judy claims to be reading some very important info for the business. Many books no matter what have some info that can be used in future.

Cabelas at Grand forks

On a the sportshow trip we always have time to stop at Cabelas Bargain Cave just to check out if there is anything there needed by Tom. This photo is for Gary our neighbour who filled our freezer in the fall.

The Hard way

Here one of the fellows steps onto the snowboard and then with a sled they attempt to pull him around the yard. Finally after many attempts itit worked but not for long , he went down in snow again. Finally they decide the hill is where to use the board.

Big Grass Cabins

Sleds arrived from Carlyle Sask. for 3 days at the lodge. 10 sleds of all sizes and makes, put on many miles on the groomed trail just 1/2 mile from the lodge and then a day of Skiing at Asessippi Ski hill just 25 miles away.

2008 700 Grizzley

New addition to Big Grass. We traded the 660 off for a 700 with power stearing and because it was Judys turn for a new  bike she chose a Red. Should be able to see it in the dust following Tom.

Spent French Fry Grease

Here Tom has barrels of grease ready to be heated and poured over the oats for bear bait. Then 50 barrels are hauled to outcamp and put out at baits. Depending what activity we usually have at bait or how difficult it is to get into bait we place 1 or 2 barrels. These barrels way around 4-500 lbs after oil is added. Each barrel is chained to a tree and has a 4-6 inch opening in top. We also use meat scraps for bait while hunting.

Bear bait prep

Tom loads oats for bear bait on to the one ton and then starts boiling oil to pour over the oats.
This is the first step of the years spring bear hunt.  All year we collect spent french frie oil and put it in barrels to use for the bear bait.  This is a little of the  behind the scenes prep that no one knows is done. When we are not hunting we are not just sitting around fluffing snow.

Whitetail sunbathing in Manitoba

Warm spot on a very cold day. Here the does are sunning themselves I had been sitting back 1/2 mile with binocs and could see many little bodies on the edge of the woods. As my truck nears to capture photo they move off  the clearing into the woods.

Whitetail in -30F

While travelling to Winnipeg near a small town the deer are feeding on bales close by the road.  There are about 20 standing around back all feeding here. IN temps like -30F deer yard up near any good feed supply they can get to  easily.
