Awesome Mule Deer

This nice Velvet Mule deer was taken by Derrick Holman Scotts son. He tooke it with his bow in Alberta in late August in a Canola field in temps of 75+F. Scott said hunting these fellows is a real challenge out west where fields are huge, and animals resting up in the uncut canola. “WE spotted his antler in the canola early in day and then stocked him. Way to go Derrick!

Multytasking can he do it??

Trip to Brandon and we stop to see if Scott is busy. Here he is working on a bear rug and of course talking on phone. He has lots of work going on in the shop rightnow. With temps as warm as they are the number of whitetail being shot is slow but will likely pick up as peek of Rut comes closer

Work begins

After the fun the work begins a good thing temps are about 50F so not cold on the fingers skinning this buck.

NOv 11, Vincents 13 point buck

Vincent takes this 13 point with his 22-250.He had been stand hunting with his DAd And Grandpa 10 times in stand and this morning he got to go push some bush. With warm temps and no snow makes it difficult to whiteatil hunt in Manitoba. It is going to be a challenge to top that one now!!

Whitetail rub lines

Near end of the lane at the lodge we have a small scotch pine which is now free of any bark and limbs. I guess a buck decided to do some rubbing here.

Last shoot of 2009

Last shoot of the season, Big Old Honkers and finally no mud. These birds flew late but hey did fly great and we put some on the ground. Judy got out of the scouting truck and into the field this am as no scouting this afternoon.

Ducks over barley

4 shooters and 4000 birds and 4 limits on the ground. They kept coming and circling and diving at the decoys. What a great experience, says Paul and Mike. Even Larry who lives in Brandon Mb .says those Mallard did want in this field”‘  Ken of Alabama just grins as he watches Missy do her job retreiving those ducks. The full plumbed Mallards aare just starting to feed here on this field and they would hav gotten some honker shooting but they did not like the Robo ducks .

Missy retrieving honkers

A big honker for a smaller Lab dog. Missy has a little problem coming across the field when the wing covers her eyes but she gets it done.  Those big honkers give a girl a work out.

Missy works hard

KEns dog Missy has worked hard retrieving the birds and gets a drink of water from Tom. SHe brings the bottle of water to him for a drink. Missy started coming to Canada in 2000. I am not sure there is another dog who has travelled so many miles. All the way from Alabama every year.

Muddy hunters

A morning in the field in pouring rain, Soaking wet, feet the size of pontoons and some good shooting. This year we did have some crazy conditons to hunt in. Over past 12 years we have nevre had so much mud. IT seems to try the patience, and endurance of all, people, guide, hunters equipment and the cook in the kitchen with it being tracked in at lunch.
