Bear 101

black bear huntingEach week Tom gives bear 101 answering any questions for the new hunters, and refreshing the answers for the past hunters, Safety, knowledge of what we expect of a hunter and what he is to expect of us,, what to do after you shoot your bear, and what we will do.. No question is too small..

Bullseye

On the X is so very important before going to the stand.. All hunters must shoot thier rifles before going to the stand.. safety and a good shot is a must.

Medicine Rock at the Wild life Management

Each year we stop and leave offerings of tobacco to the spirits at the Rock.. This is just another unique experience of the hunting in this area.

Big Bear Print

Black bear printWhile replaceing barrels there was this huge print in the mud at the site.. The big boys are travelling around looking for food and for a female bear as Rut begins in middle of May.

Diggn trees

Every year we dig some spruce trees to place inthe shelter belt around the lodge at home.. Warren decided he would take a few home to his Mom.. After the baits were checked on Saturday, the sun was shining we took time to enjoy the outdoors, relax, poke around and see what was going on.. Seems we are always rushing to get hunters in and workn, today we did a little fun stuff including another hotdog roast, and picked some crocusses which Judy must do every year.

Goody pail

bear hunting goody pailChecking baits yesterday and this is what I saw in the goody pail which is attached to the tree, clawmarks where the bear had reached in and pulled out goodys, and then chewed the pail on the edge.. lots of sign at this bait of a good bear.. We use different flavors of pieflilling, creamcheese icing and other good tasting treats.

Guides at work

Big Guides at workAfter getting the hunters in the stand the first priorty is to get a fire lit so hotdogs can be cooked.. Just a thing that must be done when you are waiting for the hunters to shoot… Did we hear your radio.. Ya but we hate to be interupted…LOL..We got to eat, and you have your sandwich with you. Right!!

Wood tick on a Hot tin Stove

wood ticks are not dangerousEvery spring we deal with many woodticks when hunting bears, they are in the grass and get on your clothing and sometimes stick on to your skin, they are on the bears when we load them to the trailers, and our 4 dogs are outside and the ticks geton them also..  if dealt with correctly if they are stuck remove them by pullin them off and a little skin comes too, apply anticeptic cream on bite, or use a hot needle to remove them, they will release themselves without takeing the skinn.. Always apply anticeptic cream to stop infection which migh occur… Here we placed it on stove, high heat kills them, or squishing them also does..

May 1 5 ft Snow girl in Spring bear camp

Fun in bear campOk what do you do when sun starts to shine after a foot of snow in Bear Camp… Snow men and girls.. OR climb up the extension ladder and slide down roof of shed, OR use a piece of tin and pull guys on it behind quad Judy driving, OR do some baking, OR watch movies, OR eat many snacks, OR take a nap, OR cut some wood for wood stove cause we seem to need it , OR get stuck pullin a old discer from the woods with the redneck, Well we did some of these ideas, and we laughed at how much fun others would be.. and Yes we did have much snow on May 1 2011..
