What do you think is a Bears favorite food?

Well in Manitoba Spring bear hunting, Beaver parts, carcass, not the hide but the body and internals is high protein. After a long winter they come out of hybernation hungry. Beavers can be out sutting small sapplings for food and because a bear can out run a Beaver they hav learned to follow the beaver dams to access easy food.. They will also pull apart a Beaver hut to get into get the kittens.

When we use the parts of the carcass, we cut them up with a band saw into small pieces and place in bait barrel , if you leave a whole beaver at the site the big old bear will come along and take the one carcass , go away have a feast then he doesn’t need to return to site for couple days… Then we put top back on barel so it is not easy access to the bait.

Spring means Dandelions,

this is also another favorite food,  the white mile in the dandelion stem is very sweet and the bears eat this to make their stomachs start to work in the spring… If you are in an area where there are lots of Dandelions the bears can stop coming to the baits for a couple of days while they are filling their bellies with Dandelions..

WE have a local First Nations Trapper who traps beaver , he gets the bounty of the tail , sells the stretched or raw beaver pelt and we pay him so this is another source of income for him.. We have known this fellow for a long time he has some great stories for us when we sit and have coffee. the hunters love to listen to his tails of the wilderness.

Manitoba Winter

How do you stay warm in Manitoba Winter?

thermometer

Honey its cold out

birdseed

More Peanut butter needed!~

frost

frosty windows

We get asked it all the time. -25C was the warmest time of the day that day, Wind was blowing 30-40mph, Do you worry about the wind chill?   Dress warm for cold temps, skin and fingers exposed freeze in a few minutes.  Mother Nature draws awesome pictures on windows that are not thermopane.

We continuously feed the wild animals so they don’t freeze,  song birds at the feeder get peanut butter and black sunflowers high in protein for their little bodies to stay warm. Pets stay in the house or heated kennels on bad days but most of our farm animals endure the temps but need extra food to keep their bodies warm.. a Good shelter belt to get out of the wind is much needed.

Are you on the highways? have a Storm kit in the vehicle for safety.  Vehicles should have winter fronts on to keep temps in motor and in cab while driving.  Manitoba Vehicles are equipped with Block heaters to plug in and keep motors warm for easier starting. make sure you drive with the fuel tank above 1/2 not below incase of road conditions changing quickly..  Manitoba has winter driving regs which you must have winter tires on your vehicle before and after certain dates to prevent more accidents.

Hard work and years of knowledge in Bear hunting

Bushels of Oats in bags placed in the barrels to keep the food supply for black bears coming from hibernation. Many pails of used french frie grease for scent and mixing with the oats collected and dumped.

Natural food

Beavers are trapped by local Manitoba trappers and chopped to pieces and placed in the barrels. Beavers are a natural food source in the spring for bears. Carcasses placed in barrels for the bears offer good food source, scent attractant for quality bear hunting.

Active baits

Guides check the sites regularly for activty at the sites, noting the amount eaten, foot prints and color of hair.  Collecting the info from all the sites then to  determine which hunter goes where . We leave it up to Tom as we feel he usually makes the correct decision on good bear hunting.

2018 Spring Bear Hunting Preparation in Manitoba

Have you ever gone on a trophy hunt or did any Trophy hunting? Do you spend time preparing your weapon and yourself for the hunt?  tuning your bow, adjusting the scope for the  bulls eye or even cleaning and oiling your stock and rest of the gun… I would think this is part of the whole hunt…. it would be terrible if the huge bruin walked into the bait, giving you the correct shot and You the hunter missed because your weapon was off…   How disappointing would that be?  Before our hunters go to the bear stand we have them shoot thier gun or bow just to make sure it didnt get bumped in traveling on plane or vehicle..  to all the hunters out there I would think this is part of the hunt.

TBT remember 2011 we had 12 inches of snow April 30

After  their patience depleted, they arrived and were shocked that we were  telling them the truth. The roads got cleared and we hoped some snow would melt so we could access the hunting area due to high banks of snow.. We knew the bears would be at the baits cause they had been eating actively for 10 days. A snow like this it just puts them up for a couple days and they are back same a they were before the weather hit.  We hung at the camp for the day and headed our first thing the next day, of course with great success..

Snow storm of the winter keeping us home

Have you experienced a winter snowstorm, keeping you home for 3 full days? With winds gusting to 75mph, about one and half feet of snow falling in about 12 hours and our winds didnot stop for 48 hours.  Wow we were Stormed and Blown but like all people who live in Manitoba we just sit tight till it disperses and then we start digging out..  While it was storming the dogs and I used  snow shoeing as my method of travel.. We put on about 6 miles in the 2 days of blocked roads, and then it was just fun to travel along the banks threw the woods to see neat paterns and banks in the snow.
