Time to Fish

Johns next challenge is to fish for walleye from the shore which is not done in Arizona. But he is thrilled when he catches his first then second and has a stringer.  Next day wow a 24 incher which the slot on Lake of the Prairies is over 12 and under 18 but a picture and memories is what John has..Way to go John on yoru Manitoba Trophies.

Jeff Sticks a Trophy

HE said only One!

Well his 4th trip and he gets the Color phase he was wanting 2 years ago.  7pm May 28 with his Hoyt in hand, and Rage Broad heads he nails this trophy while standing in the stand in Manitoba.  Jeff has done the time and has taken good bears while hunting with Big Grass. Hes passed on some took a good bear to then watch a monster come in later.

Does he need any more?

Not likely but once you have harvested one Bear it is like a disease you want to harvest another.  When you are not in the stand and time allows we take time to sit at the Lake of the Prairies to do some fishing..  Here he pulled in a Northern Pike on Johns Rod and even smiled for the picture.

Activity at the baits weas good Old fuzzy butt attended regularly filling his belly on Big Grass Oats and Grease and the tastey beaver bait. We hope he gains lots of weight so someone can see him this fall.

Wow what a Rush!!

Then the next Rush begins.

Women are True Marksmen    Women hunters are a pleasure to guide during a Black Bear hunt.. Precision is a must, a good kill is a priority. Jess is a seasoned hunter looking for a big Bucket head in 2018.  Nicole is amazed how a snap of a twig and he was standing in the site, and she waited for a good shot.  Safety off and deep breathe and she pulls the trigger.

Big Grass has guided many Ladies in camp and we make special plans if we have booked a Lady.  The anticipation of a bear entering the site shows on a ladies face by the width of the smile when you arrive after the Bear is dead. Detail is ignited with the replay when telling the story of her hunt.  Lady hunters young and old are always welcome to Camp.

Beaver for Bear bait

Are you bear hunting this spring?

Big Grass feels good baiting practices make Good Spring Bear hunts. Barrels with the stable food of Oats and Grease, then the best bear food is Beaver. We place in a barrel with logs or a lid screwed on to give hunter opportunity to determine 1. shooter, 2. good shot, 3. dead bear.

George harvested a great bear after watching him for 2 nights seeing many smaller bear feeding at the barrel.  It makes the hair stand on you neck when a large bruin enters the bait, with the slow hesitant walk, like a ghost in the nite. All of a sudden he is there! George hear a snap then he was there the first nite.

We pass the winter keeping busy with the Big Grass Animals. Wild animals need to be fed during Cold winters, HOWEVER we dont consider red Squirrels part of this family… Our Log Cabins suffer if a red quirrel chooses to locate his home into a Cabin. So standing rule:Dont show your face close to house or cabins or the 410 will blast you from that tree! yep it did…   over the years many red squirrels have not lived to tell tale…

Sammy Jo continues to bring the ball, frozen lump of snow or a stick for you to throw.. IN the house or outside she has something to throw.. I always wanted a dog to bring me a stick, Help please have her only retreive 1/2 a day! She’s Judys dog,  not spoiled lol, decently behaved, loves to play, and runs like a crazy after a ball or anything.

The Male Chessy of the House Copper! a True Male, spoiled, does the Chessy walk um Im not sure if I want to do that, thinks he should get what he wants.  But hes a great retreiver, lots of go, strong body, and will work hard in the field this fall.

What do you think is a Bears favorite food?

Well in Manitoba Spring bear hunting, Beaver parts, carcass, not the hide but the body and internals is high protein. After a long winter they come out of hybernation hungry. Beavers can be out sutting small sapplings for food and because a bear can out run a Beaver they hav learned to follow the beaver dams to access easy food.. They will also pull apart a Beaver hut to get into get the kittens.

When we use the parts of the carcass, we cut them up with a band saw into small pieces and place in bait barrel , if you leave a whole beaver at the site the big old bear will come along and take the one carcass , go away have a feast then he doesn’t need to return to site for couple days… Then we put top back on barel so it is not easy access to the bait.

Spring means Dandelions,

this is also another favorite food,  the white mile in the dandelion stem is very sweet and the bears eat this to make their stomachs start to work in the spring… If you are in an area where there are lots of Dandelions the bears can stop coming to the baits for a couple of days while they are filling their bellies with Dandelions..

WE have a local First Nations Trapper who traps beaver , he gets the bounty of the tail , sells the stretched or raw beaver pelt and we pay him so this is another source of income for him.. We have known this fellow for a long time he has some great stories for us when we sit and have coffee. the hunters love to listen to his tails of the wilderness.

Manitoba Winter

How do you stay warm in Manitoba Winter?

thermometer

Honey its cold out

birdseed

More Peanut butter needed!~

frost

frosty windows

We get asked it all the time. -25C was the warmest time of the day that day, Wind was blowing 30-40mph, Do you worry about the wind chill?   Dress warm for cold temps, skin and fingers exposed freeze in a few minutes.  Mother Nature draws awesome pictures on windows that are not thermopane.

We continuously feed the wild animals so they don’t freeze,  song birds at the feeder get peanut butter and black sunflowers high in protein for their little bodies to stay warm. Pets stay in the house or heated kennels on bad days but most of our farm animals endure the temps but need extra food to keep their bodies warm.. a Good shelter belt to get out of the wind is much needed.

Are you on the highways? have a Storm kit in the vehicle for safety.  Vehicles should have winter fronts on to keep temps in motor and in cab while driving.  Manitoba Vehicles are equipped with Block heaters to plug in and keep motors warm for easier starting. make sure you drive with the fuel tank above 1/2 not below incase of road conditions changing quickly..  Manitoba has winter driving regs which you must have winter tires on your vehicle before and after certain dates to prevent more accidents.
